Community Center + Pedestrian Bridge

Spring 2021 Design Studio

This project focuses on the small rural town of South Pittsburg, Tennessee. A short drive from Chattanooga and adjacent to a handful of increasingly popular tourist destinations, this town is in need of an improved urban climate and infrastructure for locals and visitors alike. Our studio visited with the town’s leadership and developed plans to provide the community with an indoor/outdoor community space that highlights the town’s rich history and encourages residents and tourists to gather and learn. My project is a mixed-use community center/museum, urban park and pedestrian bridge in the town center. The development’s main objective is to provide a walkable and accessible connection from one side of a large highway to the other, connecting to a local greenway development. Furthermore, the community center and local museum highlights the town’s rich African American history and honors leaders of the civil rights movement from South Pittsburg.
